Burlington, Ontario – August 21, 2018 – The Burlington Eagles Executive Members recently announced a continued partnership with Complete Concussion Management Inc. (CCMI) to implement a comprehensive concussion policy and protocol for the upcoming 2018/2019 hockey season.
Building on a successful 2017 season, the partnership will include:
- Updated concussion policies and resources, including return to learn and play protocols
- A concussion code of conduct to minimize risky activity during practices and games
- Mandatory online education and training for all coaches and team trainers
- Multimodal concussion baseline testing for athletes (ages 10 and up)
- Educational opportunities and resources for parents, guardians and players
- Concussion injury tracking, reporting and monitoring through the Concussion Tracker
- Preferred access to trained Complete Concussion Management clinics
“As an organization, our mission is to develop great hockey players both on and off the ice, and most importantly, to protect the health and safety of our athletes,” says Connie Kalpakis, Head Trainer, Burlington Eagles. “The implementation of this concussion protocol helps us to achieve our goal, allowing our athletes to play the sport they love for years to come.”
Burlington Eagles athletes will receive preferred access to recognized CCMI clinics in Burlington and the surrounding area, which is led by Burlington Sport and Spine.
“The reality is, concussions are very common in hockey, and they will happen. We’re working to educate and inform as many local organizations to ensure that these injuries are properly recognized, reported and managed,” says Dr. Dave Dorion, Owner and Chiropractor, Burlington Sports and Spine Clinic. “We are proud to partner with the Eagles and provide Complete Concussion Management’s leading program. The evidence-based rehabilitation strategies and return to activity protocols puts player safety first.”
CCMI is a network of trained concussion clinics across Canada, USA, Australia and the UK, which allows players to receive the same standard of high quality concussion care at home or on the road. Athletes individual concussion data is securely stored and accessible through the mobile Concussion Tracker app.
“As part of our commitment to concussion care, we partner local organizations with local recognized CCMI clinics to help keep athletes safe,” says Joseph Alejandria, Program Development Manager, CCMI. “Not only do we help organizations adhere to regional regulations, we go above and beyond to develop enhanced sport-specific policies to improve awareness, injury management and safety.”
Concussions cannot be prevented in high speed or contact sports. Due to the nature of the game, the brain is vulnerable to concussion at every level of hockey through direct head contact or indirectly through a whiplash effect. Therefore, it’s important that everyone involved understand the risks, knows the signs and symptoms, and takes proper steps towards proper injury management. Timely assessment and access to evidence-based treatment can help athletes to make a full recovery before returning to play.
