This year, the Peterborough Lakers of the Ontario Major Series Lacrosse league implemented a comprehensive concussion management protocol for their athletes.

In partnership with Complete Concussion Management (CCMI) and Total Physiotherapy & Sports Injuries Centre (Total Physiotherapy) the program includes:

  • Development and implementation of a concussion management protocol
  • Preseason concussion education for coaches, trainers and team staff
  • Multimodal baseline testing for all athletes
  • Injury monitoring, tracking and reporting through app-based technology (Concussion Tracker app)
  • Standardized return to play protocols
  • Evidence-based post-injury treatment and rehabilitation

“The health and safety of our athletes is the first priority for the Peterborough Lakers,” said Paul Day, General Manager, Peterborough Lakers. “This program and our partnership with CCMI and Total Physiotherapy have been an integral part of our player health management system this season. This concussion protocol offers our staff and athletes piece of mind should a player suffer a concussion.”

Total Physiotherapy is a recognized Complete Concussion Management clinic in Peterborough, providing concussion diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation to patients and athletes in the community.

“Given the physicality and intensity of lacrosse, it’s no surprise that concussions are some of the most frequent injuries we see,” said Kevin Hickey, BHScPT, FCAMPT, MCPA, Co-Founder of Total Physiotherapy, team physiotherapist for the Peterborough Lakers, and trained Complete Concussion Management practitioner. “These injuries are bound to happen. But, when they do, our team is available to provide evidence-based treatment strategies and return to play protocols that allow players to safely return, limiting the risk for further injury.”

While concussions cannot be prevented in high risk sports like lacrosse, the Peterborough Lakers are committed to staying current with the latest research, and treatment and management of these injuries. As such, the Lakers have partnered with CCMI and Total Physiotherapy to provide a leading program for their organization and athletes.
